Understanding the Three Systems of Balance

Our body relies on three key systems to maintain balance: the visual system (eyes), the vestibular system (inner ears), and the somatosensory system (feet and base of support). Each of these systems plays a crucial role in helping us stay upright and move confidently.

Jason, our lead physiotherapist, takes you through these and more in the video below. Watch to learn more.

How We Challenge These Systems

At our clinic, we work through specific balance progressions with our patients to challenge and strengthen these three systems. Here’s how we do it:

Challenging the Base of Support

  • Foot Position: By changing the position of the feet, we can alter the base of support. This might include standing with feet together, in a staggered stance, or even on one leg.
  • Unstable Surfaces: Using tools like balance boards or foam pads, we can create an unstable surface to further challenge the base of support.

Challenging the Vestibular System

  • Head Movements: Moving the head side to side or up and down can stimulate the vestibular system.
  • Secondary Tasks: Performing tasks like throwing and catching a ball while balancing can add an extra layer of difficulty.

Challenging the Visual System

  • Eyes Closed: By closing the eyes, we remove visual input, making it more challenging to maintain balance.
  • Visual Distractions: Introducing visual distractions can also help in training the visual system to maintain focus and balance.

Progressing Through Balance Exercises

Patients are guided through these balance exercises at a pace that suits their individual needs and tolerance levels. The goal is to help them improve their balance and function more easily in everyday life.

Why Balance Training is Important

Improving balance is not just about preventing falls; it’s about enhancing overall quality of life. Better balance can lead to increased confidence, improved mobility, and greater independence.
