In today’s blog post we are spotlighting one of our favourite exercises for shoulder stability—the Turkish Get Up.

This comprehensive movement challenges the shoulder to stabilise weight through various ranges of motion while keeping you in a continuous, slow-motion flow.

And it’s not just about strength; it’s about control and precision. It forces your shoulder to engage and stabilise the weight dynamically, enhancing your overall shoulder health and stability.

Check out the Jason’s demonstration in the video below, and read on for a comprehensive run through.

Step-by-Step Guide:

1. Starting Position: Lie on your back holding the weight straight up towards the sky, with the same leg bent up

2. Push Onto Elbow: Push up onto your opposite elbow.

3. Up to Hand: Move up onto your opposite hand.

4. Drive Hips Up: Drive your hips into the air.

5. Kneeling Position: Bring the opposite leg through to a kneeling position.

6. Half Kneeling: Push up into a half kneeling position.

7. Stand Up: Stand up and bring your legs together.

8. Reverse the Process: Simply reverse the steps to return to the starting position on the floor.

And there you go, easy as!

Key Points to Remember:

  • Keep the Weight Pointed Up: Ensure the weight is always pointing towards the sky, straight, and not at an angle.
  • Start Light: Begin with a lighter weight, aiming to complete 3 sets of 3 reps. Gradually increase the weight as you become more comfortable with the movement.

Conclusion

The Turkish Get up is a gem for enhancing shoulder stability and overall coordination. Give it a go, stay strong and keep moving!
